RHODE ISLAND (1999)—Separated white male, 51—“The work does, on balance, a very nice job of capturing that representative moment from my young adolescence, a time of carefree (or so it seems in memory’s haze) camaraderie with my brother and pals down at the river bend beside the textile mill...It would make for proper drama if I said this image comes from a profound sense of loss—the innocence of boyhood, the closeness with a brother that no longer exists. Well, in fact, both of these things are lost; but life does that, and it would not be honest of me to claim more emotions for such loss than I really feel.”
